KATHMANDU: The Upendra Yadav faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) has claimed the party’s legitimacy in the Election Commission of Nepal.
Leaders including Chairman Upendra Yadav have reached the commission and filed a petition for settlement as per Section 44 of the Political Parties Act.
The Yadav faction, which had secured a majority in the party’s Executive Committee, had taken action against four leaders, including another chairman, Mahantha Thakur. But after the Election Commission refused to recognize it, the Yadav faction had filed an application claiming over the majority.
The Yadav faction has claimed that Chairman Thakur was absent from the meeting convened on May 21, 22, 31 and June 17 and spoiled the party life by deffering party’s crucil meetings. The petition states that the party has to settle the official dispute on the basis of majority as per the law.
Yadav’s faction had decided to hold a meeting of the majority members of the Central Executive Committee on Thursday to claim the party’s legitimacy. JSP leader Rajendra Shrestha said that the claim was made in accordance with Articles 43 and 44 of the Political Parties Act.
Leader Shrestha informed that the Election Commission has responded to start the process as soon as possible as per the rules and regulations. He also claimed that they would get the official status of the party.
Sub-section (6) of Article 44 of the Political Parties Act clearly states that the party which has the majority officially gets all the official status including name, party flag, election symbol and those who are unable to do so will be given the opportunity to register a new party.
